Nott means: a nickname for a bald man or one who kept his hair extremely close-cropped, from Middle English not(te) ‘bald’ (Old English hnott). English: variant spelling of Knott. First found in Derbyshire where traditionally the name was descended from the Scandinavian King Canute, or Cnut.

Drayton sings “The Knot that called was Canutus, bird of old, of that great King of Danes, his name that still doth hold, his appetite to please that far and near was sought, for his, as some have said, from denmark hither brought. https://www.houseofnames.com/

My mother Amy's maiden name was Nott. Her brother, Freeman (always interested in what I was doing) wanted to know if I had any new interesting finds to add to his "Nott" family.

I always thought that my grandparents, Harry Nott and Nellie Cooper, were married in England. I should have known that Uncle Free would know! He had their marriage certificate, from - of all places - Snowflake Manitoba Canada. Who knew??

Some of my Nott's originate in London, Westminster and Middlesex, but before that...? And that is the concept of this one name study - to find out where they really started out.

Nott Surnames by location Nott Surnames Workbook, which means it is divided into compartments.

NOTT Surname Study - The compartments are countries that I have found the surname in. After that they are divided into County/State/Province. Please cursor down to the bottom to locate the country that you are interested in. I am located in Victoria BC. If you find something in BC (only) that does not have a copy available, I can locate it for you, as there are microfilm rolls available at BC Archives. If you find a mistake, I would appreciate hearing from you, as I am not perfect :)). Keep in mind that I am copying from what they have entered, this is just a finding tool and should not be considered to be proof that such an event was recorded. If you have NOTT's/KNOTT's that you would like added, I would love to hear from you!.

I have been seriously addicted to genealogy for over 25 years and will continue for many more years to come.

I have my ancestor John Knott-1444 who came to Canada from Sligo, Ireland around 1840. He has about 130 g-g-grandchildren all over N. America. The family must have originally been (presbyterian) 'transplants' from England or Scotland at some point. I would love to make that connection one day.

Hi Caren!

I have been trying to get my Nott's/Knott's back past the 1780's. I have found William Nott-289 who was born about 1788 in Moreton-in-Marsh in 1788 with possible parents of Thomas Nott and Hannah Ross, who were married 17 Mar 1765 in Westcote Gloucestershire. Their son William was baptised in Feb 1788 last name Knott and it might be him that was apprenticed 29 May 1799 and living in New Windsor, Berkshire. The next I find is the 1841 census where he has married a "Sarah" and now in St George The Martyr in Surrey, England.

I did try a researcher, but she couldn't come up with anything.

I have not tried Ireland or Scotland though, so thanks for the ideas. If you come across anything concrete, please message me, so I can have a look.

Wendy :)
